Breitling Continue to Expand UK-Exclusive Range with New Superocean Automatic 44

Breitling UK-exclusive Superocean Automatic 44

It’s almost as if Breitling has taken the place of Seiko so far in 2024, keeping the releases coming thick and fast. Coming hotly on the tail of the UK-exclusive Chronomat B01 42, we now have the UK-exclusive Superocean Automatic 44. Evidently the UK market is an important target for Breitling this year having produced two exclusive models in such quick succession.

I really like the addition of the Superocean Automatic 44 because it adds a lot more context to that original UK Chronomat with the two watches sitting well together as a pair. Automatic 44 because it adds a lot more context to that original UK Chronomat because the two watches sit together as a pair. They share similar monochromatic designs focussing on black, white and anthracite grey. The new Superocean makes this colour scheme really apparent by having a black ceramic bezel, anthracite inner bezel, black dial, white numerals and white lume across the hands and hour markers. It’s almost as if the watch is wearing a Saville Row tux.

Beyond the monochromatic design of the display, this is the Superocean 44 as we already know it, based on the 2022 collection revamp. It has a 44mm stainless steel case that’s water resistant to 300m, presented on a rubber strap or a steel bracelet. It also has the retro square minutes hand inspired by the Slow Motion edition from the 1960s and which has become something of a collection signature.

Beneath the surface of the UK-exclusive Superocean Automatic 44 the Breitling Calibre 17, and automatic movement with a 38-hour power reserve. It’s based on the Sellita SW 200-1 COSC chronometer movement, providing heaps of reliability and accuracy. Although you can’t see the movement’s refined finishing as it’s protected by a solid steel caseback.

That caseback also bears an engraving that denotes the watch’s limited edition number out of the 500 pieces that are being produced. As a UK-exclusive it is only available from UK boutiques and the UK online webstore at a price of £4,150 on rubber strap or £4,300 on bracelet. I do wonder if these limited editions – the Superocean and previous Chronomat – are a touch too subtle. Realistically you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between them and the standard black versions from across the room. However, there’s a kind of quiet, retiring charm to that fact which in itself is very British.
